What a Blog is and why it Matters to Your Business
What is a blog? The word itself is a shortened contraction of the words "web log" - cram 'em together, shorten it and you get "blog", short for web log. What is a blog? These days you hear about them all the time. What is a blog carnival? A blog carnival is when a blog owner hosts a party online and invites other bloggers to participate by writing on the same topic and linking back to the main host site.
Weblogs usually are produced with blogging tools, which are a very basic kind of content management system (CMS) that delivers content to the web or an intranet. Blog audiences typically find and view this content with a web browser. Web design is a unique skill to use the latest techniques to create a presentable website that people can access online. Web design involves using text, images, and other elements like graphics in order to lend a more professional look to the site. Websites by nature are robust platforms, i.e. Blog platforms are like a reliable, point A to point B, nice but not flashy, compact Toyota.
Bloggers often write blogs that are read by other bloggers who comment on their blogs. Bloggers have the opportunity of reaching hundreds or even thousands of people each and every day. Bloggers, like any writers, need to know their audience. Successful bloggers aim their writing at that target audience, even though other “lurkers” out there may be reading them.
Blogs are especially good for attracting low level key phrases with long tails. Let’s say your site sells Taps, perhaps you cannot fill up your site with every tap related key phrase there is as this would look too spammy. Blogs are a platform and serve the aim of content publishing. That is what the essence of a blog is. Blogs can be an extremely effective tool to provided ongoing information that is of value to your customers and prospects. I agree that it shouldn't be used as a vehicle to blatantly advertise your products and/or services, but rather as a tool to demonstrate your commitment to serving those in your target market.
Companies use blogs to talk about and promote their products. Companies do of course use blogs in very different ways, each according to their own requirements. However, those which have used them most successfully, have managed to develop better relationships and greater trust with their target groups, and hence market themselves more effectively as a result.
